Hiroyuki Sawano's Gundam Scores Reunite for One Night: UC, NT and Hathaway Reborn with Orchestra + Band in February 2027

UC, NT and Hathaway: Sawano's 'sound of the Universal Century,' connected in a single night

When people picture Gundam music, many first hear those fanfare-like orchestral swells. But since the 2010s, the composer quietly and steadily updating the Universal Century (U.C.) has been Hiroyuki Sawano. Now the scores he wrote for three works — Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (UC), Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative (NT) and Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash — will ring out together in a single evening. The concert "Hiroyuki Sawano × THE SOUND OF GUNDAM - Mobile Suit Gundam UC・NT・HATHAWAY Concert -" is set for Saturday, February 27, 2027 at Tokyo Garden Theater, doors at 17:30 and start at 18:30. The show layers the music over famous scenes from each work, performed by an orchestra-plus-band ensemble.

What makes this thrilling is that these three are not scattered one-off gigs; in Sawano's hands they form one continuous story. The grandeur of UC, the prayer-like stillness of NT, and the taut tension of Hathaway's Flash. Set in the same Universal Century, Sawano shifted the center of gravity of his sound a little with each title. Getting to bathe in all three back to back is, in effect, experiencing a 'sonic timeline' of the U.C. era.

Orchestra + band: Sawano's signature format

You can't discuss Sawano's scoring without his hybrid approach — letting live strings and horns share the stage with distorted guitars and programmed beats. The lineup here is the real thing: alongside Sawano himself (Piano) are Hiroshi Iimuro and Harutoshi Ito (Guitar), Toshino Tanabe (Bass), Masato Fujisaki (Drums), KOHTA YAMAMOTO (Synthesizer), the Koichiro Muroya Strings (Strings), Team Otohiko Fujita (Horn) and Ryo Noda (Trumpet). Colliding the depth of a classical ensemble with the drive of a rock band on the same stage already electrifies on record; feel that air move in a live hall and the impact is on another level.

Hathaway's Flash in particular swings to extremes between quiet and violence — from the delicate piano and strings that sketch Gigi's presence to the brutal beats of mobile suit combat. Having that gap hammered out live, synced to famous scenes on screen, is enough to make you imagine the room's temperature rising and falling.

The guest vocalists, and the general on-sale at the end of August

Part of Sawano's appeal is the strength of his song-form, vocal tracks. The guest vocalists are mpi, SennaRin, Benjamin, mizuki and Laco (in Japanese syllabary order). SennaRin in particular sang the duet "ENDROLL" with Yohei Kawakami [Alexandros] and the insert song "CIRCE" in Hathaway's Flash — a voice that carries that tense U.C. air. The moment their voices ride over a live orchestra should be one of the show's peaks.

Every seat comes with a visitor-perk pamphlet (8 pages), across three tiers: "Reserved Seat with Limited Goods" at 16,500 yen, "Reserved Seat" at 14,000 yen and "Rear Reserved Seat" at 13,000 yen (all tax included). The limited-goods tier adds an acrylic stand using the key visual. Advance lotteries have already wrapped, and general sales start Saturday, August 29 at 10:00. The event itself is more than half a year out, in February 2027, but some tiers may sell fast.
